“(A) Brand New Me”

I heard this song on the radio the other day. But it wasn’t the Dusty Springfield version that I’m guessing most of us are familiar with. The voice was familiar; I spent the whole song trying to place it. Marvin Gaye - no; Jimmy Ruffin - no. The voice was so smooth; turned out to be The Iceman, Jerry Butler. Further investigation revealed that he actually wrote the song; yet another example of the 1960’s business model of a white artist having a hit with a black artist’s tune.

I like The Iceman’s version better, but then I discovered another artist covered the song. Amen and hallelujah, did she ever - the way only she can.

Can you guess who? (It wasn’t Alivia Keys who sang a different song by the same title).

Enjoy!!
