If you listen to enough old soul music, you will hear the name Don Covay. And when you hear him sing, you will wonder why he didn’t have more hits. When I had that thought, it reminded me of an observation I made a few years ago. Imagine being a shortstop in the Orioles or Yankees organization when Ripken and Jeter were starting to make their marks on the MLB. No matter how good you were, for the next 15 years (linger?), you are not going to play shortstop regularly for the Orioles or Yankees. Wrong place, wrong time.
Seems that may have been Mister Covay’s case. But anybody from Orangeburg, SC (less than 60 miles from my hometown) who wrote “Chain Of Fools,” deserves a post on my blog. Mercy, mercy.
