Madras, Oregon
June 28, 2021
I was talking with the woman in the pro shop at the Madras nine hole course. She said the course was originally a “pasture course” laid out by a fellow who lived golf but was short on capital. Eventually he expanded it to 18 and then back to nine when the city took over management if they course. Using effluent from its water system the city made improvements to the course. While the layout of each hole is straight forward, I was impressed by the quality of the fairways and greens. The greens were a bit slow but that’s what happens when it’s 100+ degrees and you want to protect the turf.
She suggested I use Google Maps to find pasture courses along my route. I think I will do that!
I asked her why there are so many 9 hole courses in Oregon. She speculated that most are privately owned and are short on capital. The courses are easily accessible in terms of cost and encourages more people to get out and play.
