I had the honor of working for Dr,. Chu at DOE. Several times I briefed him on projects I was leading the financing of. I was surprised by his cuteness; he didn’t suffer distractions. He thought he was the smartest guy in the room and he was. One of the most impressive people I have ever met. A vast knowledge and the ability to ask penetrating questions that got to the heart of the matter. One project I briefed him on would have been the first US offshore wind project. He saw right through the financing structure and asked THE question — why do they need us?
One of his assistant secretaries was Steven Koonin who is a well-known climate denier/skeptic. His claim is the science is unsettled. (To which most say, of course it is but we know enough to know we better do something now to prevent long tail problems in the future.
Interestingly both Chu and Koonin are at Stanford; Chu at Stanford itself and Koonin at the Hoover Institution.
