Charlottesville

August 11, 2025

Monday morning. 530 AM. My mistake was that I still haven’t learned NOT to scroll to Google News when I wake up. But I do and this morning I was greeted with “Trump Evicting Homeless From DC.”

String of expletives.

We all understand. We’ve seen the homeless — here in Charlottesville on the pedestrian mall and on the Corner. It’s uncomfortable, sad, frustrating, disappointing. Why can’t we find shelter for these folks so they don’t have to live outside?

The normal human response, I believe, in the end is one of compassion not intolerance, not eviction with no place to go (which is what got some of the homeless where they are today).

I know some will cheer King Trump’s position. “Yeah, kick their asses out! MAGA forever!” His spokespeople will blame Biden and the DC government.

I hope others will see it as another example of Trump’s lack of compassion and empathy, especially for the very less fortunate. Hey Trump, why didn’t you stop your car and get out and talk to those folks to understand their situation? You’re their president, too. Oh, you would have been late for your tee time?

The homeless are our fellow human beings; they deserve our compassion.

(I know I don’t know all the complications of the homeless situation. Obviously if there were an easy way to give the homeless shelter we wouldn’t have folks on the street.)

I realize I might sound like a “bleeding liberal.” Sorry — fiscally conservative, socially liberal. And very much against the chaos.
