Haines Falls, New York

August 14, 2024

Highlights:

As I was driving the back roads of Pennsylvania today I thought about how many more roads and small towns there are in the East than in the middle of the country — or especially in places like Colorado, Utah and Nevada. In the East there is likely a direct route to a nearby town as well as several indirect routes Out West, there may not be a nearby town and there are a limited number of routes. I’m probably not explaining this very well and it may be a statement if the obvious. The East is older and more densely populated so if course there are more roads and small towns.

Perhaps it’s because the towns I am passing through are so small. But I haven’t come across any old movie theaters since I left Charlottesville. Maybe I just haven’t seen them. Or maybe movie theaters were not popular in rural Pennsylvania.

Google Maps indicated there is a Monticello, Pennsylvania. I could not find any information about it but drove there just in case. Nothing.

Frackville, Pennsylvania. founded in 1976, is named for Daniel Frack, an early Anglo-American settler.

Ringtown, Pennsylvania. Settled 1833; population 721.

Narrowsburg is a hamlet (and a census-designated place) in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 379 at the 2020 census. Narrowsburg is in the western part of the Town of Tusten at the junction of Routes 52 and 97. The community was first called "Homans Eddy" after Benjamin Homan, the first settler in the town. The Arlington Hotel, Kirk House, and Narrowsburg Methodist Church are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Monticello is a village located in Thompson, Sullivan County, within the Catskills region of New York, United States. It is the seat for the town of Thompson, and the county seat of Sullivan County. The population was 7,173 at the 2020 census. [4] The village was named after the residence of Thomas Jefferson. In 1801, Samuel F. Jones was given the task of finding a route for the Newburgh and Cochecton Turnpike to connect The Hudson and Delaware Rivers. While he marked the path through what was then Orange and Ulster counties he saw an opportunity to build a village on the turnpike. Samuel convinced his younger brother, John Patterson Jones, to buy a 1861-acre tract of land that would be bisected by the turnpike so they could build this new village. In 1803, John and 11 other men started work on a sawmill, and other infrastructure to help them build the village. The group left the area during the winter but would return in the early months of 1804 to continue their work. In spring of the same year the route for the turnpike was finalized and the two brothers started to plan the village. After the plan was completed, the first tree was chopped down by John September 4, 1804, on the property that would later become his house. The village grew from there, having 20 houses by 1813 and being officially incorporated on April 20, 1830.

Just north of Monticello are South Fallsburg and Fallsburg. Both towns have large Hasidic Jew populations. They also have the highest density of minivans I have seen since the mid 1990s! Wow! I Googled as to whether I was imagining things — I was not.

There are two Monticello’s in New York. There is the village of Monticello, in the Catskills (Sullivan County). There is also the hamlet of Monticello, in Central New York (Otsego County), see Richfield (hamlet), New York.

Neversink is a town in Sullivan County, New York, United States. The population was 3,366 at the 2020 census. The Neversink River that flows through the town is claimed to be the birthplace of American fly fishing. The town was formed from the Town of Rochester in Ulster County, New York in 1798 before Sullivan County was formed. The Town of Rockland was created from part of Neversink in 1809, and part of Neversink was used to make the newer Town of Fallsburg in 1826. When the Neversink and Rondout reservoirs were built, as part of the New York City water supply system, many communities were submerged. The communities of Old Neversink and Bittersweet were lost to form the Neversink Reservoir, while Eureka, Montela, and Lackawack were lost to form the Rondout Reservoir.

In 1935, the town passed a dry law prohibiting the sale of alcoholic beverages, which remained in effect despite repeated efforts to repeal it.[3][4][5] The town partially lifted the ban in 2015, allowing alcohol in restaurants but retaining the ban on sales in convenience stores.

Sundown is a hamlet located within Denning, in Ulster County, New York, United States. It is 34.6 miles from the city of Kingston and 119 miles from New York City. Sundown is near the southern town line of Denning.
