This evening was the fifth of six weekly one-hour First Tee classes for 5-6 year old kids. Six weeks ago I was apprehensive about working with this age group; instead, it has become one of the highlights of my week.

This session’s life lesson was to be on perseverance. Now that’s a heck of a big word and concept to talk about with this age group. So I simplified the message and told the kids that this week was about “keep on going.” While I was explaining that to the kids, one of them shouted out “bananas.” Surprisingly quickly, I told the kids that our word for the class was bananas and that it meant keep on going. They thought that was funny so we went with it.

We had a fun time saying bananas throughout class.

However, I hope I have not led the kids astray. I’m sitting here imaging them in their 20s having a serious discussion about perseverance and them shouting out bananas!

The goal of First Tee is to teach kids life skills through golf. As a coach and an old man, it is such a blast to be around the joy and enthusiasm these kids have. Truly awesome.
