I left Bandon yesterday with the intent (or is it intention?) of a three-hour drive to Paris, Oregon. I didn’t make it. I got held up by a state park, a golf course, a town called Charleston and walking around downtown Coos Bay. Those are each a good excuse for not making it to Paris yet.

Intent and intention share meanings and overlap in use, but they are not completely interchangeable.

Both words mean "the thing that you plan to do or achieve : an aim or purpose."

Often they can be used interchangeably:

She thinks I'm trying to make things difficult for her, but that's not my intent/intention.

It was the explicit intent/intention of the architect to suggest a church steeple.

The president signaled his intent/intention to meet with his allies.

Intention implies little more than what one has in mind to do or make happen:

How about this explanation? In terms of meaning, there is little difference between these two nouns. They both mean a plan, or purpose, to do something. However, there is a difference in the way we use the words. Intent is used in more formal situations, such as in legal contexts, whereas intention is used in a wide range of situations; it is a more everyday word. Also, in grammatical terms, intent is an uncountable noun and intention is a countable noun.
