Thanks to my friend Anna Koester for this mantra.
Flexible, nimble, and agile are related terms that describe adaptability and quickness, but with different nuances. Flexibility is the ability to bend without breaking, often implying physical malleability. Nimbleness suggests quick and light movement, both physically and mentally, often with dexterity and precision. Agility can mean quick and easy movement or reaction, but in business, it refers to a methodology for adapting quickly to change.Â
Flexibility
Definition: The ability to bend, adapt, or change without breaking.
Nuance: It often focuses on a state of being or a physical quality. For example, "flexible working hours" is about adapting schedules, and a flexible body can bend easily.
Example: A gymnast's flexible body allows them to perform complex, bendy movements.
Nimble
Definition: Quick and light in movement or action, often showing skill and dexterity. It also implies quickness of mind.
Nuance: It emphasizes a combination of speed, precision, and a quick ability to understand and react.
Example: A nimble dancer moves with speed and grace, while a nimble mind quickly solves a puzzle.Â
Agile
Definition: Able to move quickly and easily, or a business methodology for adapting quickly to change.
Nuance: The term has both a physical meaning and a specific business meaning that is distinct from simply being flexible or nimble.
Example: An agile methodology involves a structured approach to work like Scrum, enabling a team to adapt to feedback in short cycles. A rock climber is physically agile, while a company using Agile methodology is agile in its business practices.Â
