I was very touched to receive this book as a gift from my friends Anna and Jack. They had found it at the Friends of the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library (JMRL) Fall Book Sale which is ongoing this week.

It reminded me of how we “bought out the store” when we first moved here and filled our bookshelves with wonderful books that we had read or looked forward to reading. We easily bought 80 books.

But what really hit me was the title. Was it really a play on Blue Highways? The preface answered that question.

(I had to laugh when I read the Author’s Note. As I have written my memoir “I Went To Paris’” … I mean as I have written my memoir in my head!…I have often wondered how I would explain the randomness of my visiting the Paris’. Now I have permission to present them in any order I care to!)

For several hours I drifted off into memories of my wanderabout. Did I really sleep in the back of Hi Ho Silver? The memories of each Paris. Colorado, Utah, Oregon, the PCH, Covid, sand green golf courses, the people I met, truck stop showers, North Dakota, fun photos, Polygamy Porter…. So many of those memories are rooted in the fact that I drove blue highways.

I started the book yesterday. I quickly felt wanderlust. Could I do such a trip? I also felt the smoldering fire of my desire to document my story if only for myself. It’s an elephant — but I know how to eat an elephant.

🧡💙
