I received this email this week from friends I made when I visited Bandon, Oregon last summer.

A couple of weeks ago, I received a text from a fellow Wahoo I met in Utah last year telling me about his cycling trip from Flagstaff to Chicago.

The email and the text filled my heart with joy. It means so incredibly much to me that our brief encounters led to us following up with each other.

I've been thinking a lot about friends recently. How lucky I am to have the ones I have. How sad it is that other friendships have faded. And what is it that makes them fade? And why is it that I remember certain people even though we didn't know each other.

I used to tell Lucian that we are the average of the five people we hang around the most. That might be a good rule for high school friends. My revised observation might be "you never know how your words and actions as well as words you don't say and actions you don't take will affect someone. So be your best all the time -- you might just mean something pretty cool to someone."
