Friday night Courtney took me to an Ingrid Michelson concert at Lincoln Center. Ms. Michelson is a favorite of Courtney’s. She’s had a couple of “Top 40” hits over the past few years but may be best known for writing the soundtrack to the musical version of The Notebook.
It was a very entertaining 90 minutes with Ms. Michelson accompanied by her two backup singers, a string quartet and a pianist. For several songs she brought out friends who I believe were from The Notebook cast. What voices!
Ms. Michelson was engaging in her monologues between songs. She wasn’t afraid to share her personal foibles, which felt right in the intimate setting we were in.
As moved as I was by many of her songs, her encore really made my tears flow. For it, she was onstage by herself and seated behind a massive grand piano. She soulfully sang the first few words — “wise men say…”. My mind raced. Is this an Otis Redding song? Maybe not Otis but clearly a soul singer. The more she sang, the more I felt the song overtaking me. Yet I still couldn’t think of who sang the song originally.
When she finished singing, I still hadn’t found the answer, but I knew I had just heard a very, very powerful song.
Well, it turns out Elvis sang the song first in the film Blue Hawaii. While that may be true, but I’m pretty sure I’ll never forget Ingrid Michelson touching my soul with her version.
Here’s Elvis’ version.
