I was caught off guard because there are no signs indicating you are entering the national park and no ranger station for me to flash my Senior Pass.
Most of the traffic on State Route 20 was going west to east. That’s because the Seattle area is two hours west. Amazing how many people were escaping into the area.
A much higher concentration of campers in the back of pickups — “the John Steinbeck” as I call it. I am thinking that’s because those are good RVs for a weekend trip. Not many big RVs but a good number of smaller fifth wheels.
Very much a “Washington license plate” crowd. The local national park although I am sure Olympic National Park must be even more popular because it is even closer to Seattle?
Twisp, Winthrop and Mazama. Discovered little mountain towns with — wait for it — coffee shops and art studios. Winthrop wins the prize for most touristy of the three. Although I just drive through, it looks like most people were not there for the hiking. I like to think that I can still pull off the “maybe he’s here for the outdoor activities” look.
