Just 1?

Now that some pandemic restrictions have been lifted I have splurged a few times and eaten in a restaurant. The experience has reminded me of something I observed previously. When I say “One for dinner,” for example, 90 percent of the time the response from the host/hostess is “Just one?” I don’t recall when I would say “Two for dinner” that the response would be “Just two?”

I am not complaining. One is what it is. It is an observation about about almost universal response I have noticed.

I guess it’s better than the host forming an L with his fingers.
