Thanks to Courtney for sending me the above “cartoon.” “Be a man.” I never questioned the “wisdom” behind that sentence. — at least not until the past four years. There are so many assumptions behind those three words that there is no way that one can interpret it correctly. At least that’s my take.
More helpful might be “Be a person.” That at least eliminates the manhood element of it.
Most helpful? “Be who you are and ask for help.”
As far as the term “mental health” goes, I prefer the term “emotional health.” “Mental” to me means how the brain works. “Emotional“ incorporates thoughts and feelings not the physical brain.
But hey, I’m clearly not changing the world.
