The Mississippi River runs through Minnesota for 650 miles, from its source at Lake Itasca in the north to the Minnesota/Iowa border. The river flows through a variety of landscapes, including prairies, woodlands, valleys, and bluffs, and has different widths and flow rates. The river also passes through the Twin Cities area, which includes Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Fun fact: From its origin at Lake Itasca the river runs north through Emidji, allowing the city to call itself the first city on the Mississippi.
