Newport, Oregon

July 9, 2021

Commercial fishing. There is a fish processing plant in the middle of the tourist area. It is Friday at 5:30 pm and the men -- they are all men — look big, weather worn and tired. How often do we think about the incredible effort that goes into catching the fish we eat? The dock is lined with vessels — they are brightly painted and look well cared for. But smaller than I would care to go out to ocean on.

The tourist area is filled with gift shops snd seafood restaurants. The sidewalks are crowded with families — with kids begging for candy and ice cream; the dads looking frustrated; and the mom’s keeping everything in balance.

Oops.
