Quality Inn ($89)
Madras, Oregon
I like Madras. It’s a bit old in parts but there is a vitality to the town. Yesterday I found a sushi place in downtown and got lunch and dinner had the “mango summer roll.” Nothing like fresh mango. Lots of Mexican restaurants reflecting the population.
The town is at the junction of US 26 and US 97. US 97 seems to be a major semi route in this part of the state.
I looked up Madras postcards on eBay last night. Appears the town has always embraced its crossroads with a number of the postcards being of motels that best I can tell are no longer here.
Apparently this is area is considered “high desert.” How high is 2250 feet? I imagine the desert part comes from the rain shadow created by the Cascade Mountains.
Will I move on or stay one more day? At 730 AM, it’s a toss up.
Meanwhile this California omelette was too big for me!
