Rush used to say that, if he could have any one else’s brain, he’d take Antonin Scalia’s. If I could have any one else’s brain, I’d take Chuck’s…..


All Chuck’s points, in my opinion, were right on the nose -- very well written and illustrated, and a contribution to humanity. I would like, however, to focus on a point Mr. Dalio made and Chuck tangentially alluded to in his last five paragraphs – the importance of the Rule of Law.


Virtually all of their analyses of the two sides as they exist today are spot-on, but one yuge difference exists – belief in and adherence to the Rule of Law. Let me illustrate this with three examples.

Don, your portrayal of “The Left” paints quite a picture. Is it your view that The Left should just shut up and be quiet because they are wrong? Of the 81 million folks who voted for Biden, what percentage of those do you consider to be The Left? Good stuff.

Dalio is a bit of an alarmist. The United States has been through periods of extreme partisanship in the past and only once, in 1861, did it become so extreme there was Civil War. We had a period in the 1830's when Civil War was contemplated but cooler heads found a way forward. The Great Depression of the 1930's had the potential to lead to a political crisis but memories of the 1861-1865 Civil War were fresh enough, and the three branches of government resilient enough, to persevere.


The 1960's also had the potential to break the nation with the twin divisive issues of the Civil rights movement and Vietnam war creating a divide between generations as well as racial…
