Icelandic State Park

Cavalier, North Dakota

September 6, 2024

930 AM CT

I spent the night in the town of Pembina's town camprgound. Ten dollars -- and a bathroom with running water!

I drove back to Cavalier this morning as I can access WIFI in the parking lot of the Icelandic State Park visitor's center. A pretty morning for a 40 minute drive.

Seeing Joliette on my map made me think of the Blues Brothers which made me think of this:

My goal for today is to get to Rugby, North Dakota -- why?

In 1931, the town of Rugby erected a 15-foot-tall rock obelisk marking the "Geographical Center of North America". This was moved to a slightly different location in 1971 with the expansion of US Highway 2. According to a listing by the U.S. Geological Survey, Rugby is actually approximately 15 miles from the geographic center of North America (6 miles west of Balta), and even this designation carries no official status.
