What a different mindset the folks had who took the Oregon Trail to "settle" out here. ("Settle" seems like such a passive word for what really happened.). They left friends and family behind perhaps never to hear from them again and certainly with minor prospects of ever seeing them again. And for a place they had never seen and only heard stories about -- and we know how accurate stories can be. Plus the hardship of the journey. It all took more guts than I think I would have had.
