Who The Heck Is Fernando Tatís, Sr?

Catalina State Park

February 27, 2020

Tatís played for 11 years in the major leagues for five different teams. He broken in with the Rangers in 1997 and was traded to the Cardinals in 1998. Entering the 1999 season, he had not hit a home run in a major league game.

Then came April 23, 1999. The Cardinals were facing Chan Ho Park and the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Tatís was batting in the four hole, behind Mark McGuire and Ahead of J.D. Drew. He came up in the third inning with the bases loaded, no outs. BOOM! He drilled a grand slam to deep left field. His first major league home run.

That is a pretty good story, but it doesn’t end there unfortunately for Chan Ho Park. The Cardinals batted around that inning. Tatís came up again with two outs, bases loaded. BOOM AGAIN! Tatis’ second career homer was another hand slam, in the same inning, off the same pitcher!

Tatis is the only player in MLB history to hit two grand slams in the same inning. Much less they bring his first career homers and off the same pitcher. He also holds the major league record for the most RBIs in a single inning (you got it, eight).
