Wyoming Wind Generation

Fairfield Inn

Laramie, Wyoming

December 1, 2022

Wyoming has 20 operating wind farms representing (as best I can figure) about 3100 MW of capacity. It has another 3100+ MW of wind capacity in development.

For a wind farm developer, Wyoming has a wonderful resource -- strong and constant. I suspect developers need to find offtakers outside of the state as electricity demand here must be rather stable.

I believe the “winter problem” for wind turbines is ice more than snow — snow tends to slide off the vertical surfaces of the blades. But ice can form on the blades and that’s a “heavy” (pun) problem. That’s what happened in Texas a couple of years ago — Texas is known for its ice storms. I’m guessing ice isn’t the issue here in Wyoming — or for that matter in ND and SD where there is also significant installed wind capacity. My two cents.
