Wow, I had forgotten about David Thompson. As this video says, he was MJ before MJ. When Dr. J retired, he said David Thompson was one of the best players he ever played against.
Unfortunately, when Dr. J retired, Thompson was in jail. In 1978 he had signed the biggest contract in team sports history - $4 million over 5 years. But he got messed up in drugs and alcohol and his career was cut short.
He has recovered now and seems to be in a good place.
The 1970s were a special time for ACC basketball. Sure there was UCLA but the ACC was by far the most competitive conference.
The Sports Caster is right -- he was a more complete player in every way than Michael Jordan. Saw 'em both with my own eyes....
