The Emotional Hole You Can’t Fill With Golf
What happens when golf becomes a mirror for your self-worth. by Josh Nichols Golf is one of the most emotionally charged games in existence. Every shot can feel personal. Every mistake can feel like a reflection of who you are. That’s exactly why golf so easily turns from a fun game into a tool for managing our emotions — and I want to explore why that never quite works. The Hidden Transaction Most golfers don’t realize they’re making a trade every time they play: “If I play

Habits
Charlottesville November 3, 2025 Bingo! An important lesson as I have 27 weeks until my potential 50th high school reunion. Another great lesson about how brains work.

As Seen At My Gym
Charlottesville October 29, 2025 I saw a fellow wearing this t shirt at ACAC this afternoon. I went over and told him I liked the shirt (who have I become?!). We struck up a conversation; he told me I could buy the t shirt online, which I did moments later. The t shirt reminded me of how I visited each of those places, motivated by the Little Feat song "Willin." Little Feat's version is a classic. But man, can Linda Ronstadt put her mark on the song. Wow!

Life's Instruction Manual?
Charlottesville October 29, 2025 There are several books that I have read over the past several years that have had a profound impact on me. They have awakened me to ideas and practices that have changed the way I approach my life -- at least hopefully much of the time. I often wonder why I did not learn these "life hacks" when I was growing up, or at least way before starting eight years ago. Perhaps, I wonder, is it because I never stepped outside of myself and thought,

At The Gym
Charlottesville October 28, 2025 1530 An early winter day in Charlottesville. Very gray (as opposed to normal gray!), 50 degrees and windy; my weather app says it feels like 46 degrees. I think it feels like 36 degrees. Came to the gym to walk, lift and stretch — not necessarily in that order. Still pursuing that weight loss goal! I’m eating healthy maybe 70 percent of the time. Perhaps a bit more. Funny, part of my drive to work out is so I can do Pilates better. And t

October 26 & 27, 2025 -- To Raleigh For Duke @ NC State
Charlottesville October 28, 2025 I'm having a great time following my great niece's first soccer season at Duke. What started out as me going to her games to have a familiar face in the stands has turned into bit of a fanatical experience for me. I've lost track of how many games I have attended (it's 11 of 17 plus two more games in the spring) but it's been a blast to see her do so well, watch the Devils, see how the team responds to the challenges of the season, and meet

Average Weight 1960 Vs 2025
October 31, 2025 The average weight for a 65 year old male in 1960 was 166 pounds. By 2025, that average had increased to … 201 pounds. That 35 pound increase represents a 21 percent increase. I can think of a lot of unhealthy reasons why that is the case and only one (the weight room) that is probably healthy.

“That’s The Sickest Name”
Charlottesville October 21, 2025 I just finished my pre Pilates workout at the gym. Feeling a bit groggy, I headed over to the snack bar to grab a Gatorade Zero to address my perceived dehydration. I gave the attendant my name to charge my account — he fired back with “that’s the sickest name.” The second attendant chimed in with “Yeah, that’s an awesome name” Even at 66 years old, I get a boost from such things. It’s harder to impress people these days and if takes my na

Confidence & Shame
Charlottesville October 20, 2025 I apologize that my blog has become a place for me to capture my musings on certain topics. Not as much fun to read or write as my wanderabout posts, but maybe helpful in the long run to capture some of the emotional/intellectual journey that I am on? Over the past seven weeks I have been coaching kids from 5 to 11 years old at First Tee. We've talked about responsibility, respect, confidence, goal setting/pursuit and perseverance. The most

Not normalized by the president. If you wonder why I can’t support Chump, this is exhibit 1 with the pardoning of the January 6th rioters as exhibit 2. It should be easy for either party to put up a person I could support. But I don’t see that happening.
