Two opinion pieces in the WSJ disparage employees of the Federal government calling them generically bureaucrats.
Every organization has some number of bureaucrats. The government is no different.
But the government is also filled with smart, talented, motivated people who believe in the mission of public service. They are diligent in staying within the lines of the laws and regulations they are responsible for implementing.
We are lucky to have people like that. The pay sucks — unlike in other countries where pay is competitive with the private sector. Those countries encourage the best and brightest to spend at least part of their career in the government. Here we bemoan their existence.

concur. it is unfortunate when otherwise intelligent people paint with a broad brush like that. when i was asked what my job entailed, i always told people it was to help those who happened to own an airport achieve their goals.
